Welcome to Your Math Class!

(brought to you by Ms Allen)

I love being at East High!  I'd like to welcome you to your math class.  The best way to get a hold of me is through e-mail or remind.  Since we are embarking on a new journey of school life, understand that I might not be able to respond immediately, even during school hours.  ALL of your assignments/work/reflections/assessments will be POSTED in Google Classroom (GC), as well as videos and recorded notes!  Grades are NOT posted in GC, they will be posted in Infinite Campus (IC).  Even though everything is posted in GC, you might not be able to access the work from GC (for those in-person you might have paperwork to turn in).  Reflections will be a BIG part of the class and will be assigned in GC under the topic Homework Reflections.

I will do the best I can to keep you informed of what is going on.  Embrace change! I understand that consistency is important, but this is the year to try and become more flexible and accept he things you can not change, yet understand what you can change and just do the best you can in your situation.

If you feel like you are slow, or not good at math, that's ok! Mathematicians feel slow and not good at math often.

Did you know that a synapse grows in our brain every time we make a mistake?  What does that mean?  Well, it means that I expect, respect and value mistakes and misconceptions.  True Mathematicians learn from misconception and mistakes.  He or she is often slow to process information and has failed at many math concepts.  Mathematicians tend to be resilient people.

We often struggle with the idea that there are many ways to approach just one problem in math.  I try to teach several ways to approach a problem.  I try to see where you are at with a problem and help you discover the best way for YOU to approach that problem.  This can be frustrating because I do not just "give you the answer", but this method does help you learn. Every one of you can gain a deeper understanding of a math concept.

I look forward to learning from all the creative, spirited and diverse minds that will occupy the classroom!
